Be growth minded and nurture your wellness this spring
April is here, and it's that beautiful time of year when we roll up our sleeves and plant our gardens. I always think of growth and new beginnings in spring, because as I look outside and see blooms, I can’t help but reflect on how the year is going. It is a perfect moment to reflect on our personal growth. In the spirit, I’d like to explore the connection between a growth mindset and holistic wellness. Because I enjoy exercises for clarity, I included a simple activity to help us check our progress for the year.
What is a Growth Mindset?
It’s the belief in yourself to develop your abilities through hard work, learning, and resilience.
Embracing Challenges: Seeing barriers as opportunities to learn and grow.
Persistence: Continuing to work hard despite setbacks.
Learning from Criticism: Be open to feedback and use it to improve and adapt.
Inspired by Others: Finding motivation in the success of others.
Continuous Learning: Always seeking to learn new things and improve skills.
What a Growth Mindset Is Not:
Avoiding Challenges: Do not try things that are new or difficult.
Giving Up Easily: Quitting at the first sign of difficulty.
Ignoring Feedback: Dismissing constructive criticism and not using it for improvement.
Comparison with Others: Feeling threatened by others' success rather than inspired.
Fixed Abilities: Believing that skills and intelligence are static and cannot be developed.
The Connection To Our Health
When we live in a rigid space that does not allow for growth, we are not only creating barriers to accomplishing our goals, but it can also impact our health. Research has linked a growth mindset to reduced stress, greater resilience, and improved mental health. When we're in a state of cognitive openness and readiness to learn, we're more likely to engage in healthy behaviors, adapt to change, and develop a deeper appreciation for our wellness journey.
A Growth Minded Check-In Activity
Here’s a simple activity to help you reflect on your personal growth this year and embrace a growth mindset:
1. Reflect on Your Goals: Take a moment to sit somewhere peaceful. Reflect on the goals you set at the beginning of the year. Have they evolved? Are these goals still aligned with your vision for wellness?
2. Celebrate Small Wins: Write down three small achievements you've made. They don't have to be big! It could be a new healthy recipe you've tried, a positive change in your routine, or an emotional breakthrough.
3. Identify Challenges: Acknowledge any challenges or setbacks you’ve faced. What have they taught you? How can you use these lessons as stepping stones for growth?
4. Renew Your Intentions: Based on your reflections, renew your intentions. Set one new, attainable goal for the coming months that excites you and aligns with the growth you envision.
As spring begins to bloom, remember that you, too, have the potential to grow, adapt, and thrive. Embrace the process and you’ll bloom too!
