Strengthen social connections and renew your relationships this May

Does anyone else feel like they go into social hibernation during the winter? I know I do! It's something my friends and I talk about. The colder months often nudge us indoors, and that's when we wind down and recharge after the busy summer and fall. But as the weather warms up, it feels like we emerge anew, ready to reconnect with the world around us. Invitations to BBQs, concerts, hikes and times on the water bring us back together!

While there are countless reasons we may lose touch with those we care about, let's shift our focus away from the why. Instead, let's embrace this time of year as an opportunity to rejuvenate our social bonds and strengthen our sense of community.

This May, I'm all in on enhancing one of the cornerstones of wellness—relationships! To kick off this endeavor, I’ve decided on a simple activity for us to try. It includes an invitation to connect and, of course, a reflection exercise. Why? Because it's all too easy to dive into social activities without pausing to consider how they truly impact us. Reflecting on these experiences can deepen our awareness and appreciation of our interactions.

My hope is that this connection activity fills you with positive energy and joy. However, I understand that some social situations can sometimes leave us feeling less than great. If you've experienced this, try initially reaching out to someone who consistently brings thoughtful conversation and positivity into your life.

Why Our Social Connections Matter

Research has continually shown that strong social connections are linked to numerous physical and mental health benefits. These include reduced stress levels, improved mood, longevity, and stronger immune systems. By nurturing our relationships, we not only enhance our own well-being but also enrich the lives of those around us.

Your Connection Activity - Only 2 Steps!

1. Try Reaching Out to an Old Friend

  • Think of someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. Maybe it’s a former coworker, an old friend from school, or a distant family member.

  • Reach out with a phone call, video chat, or my favorite a handwritten letter. Express genuine interest in their life and share a few updates about yourself.

2. Look to Participate in a Community Event or Class

  • Explore community centers, local events, or online platforms for activities that interest you, such as a book club, concert, cooking class, or a new workout studio.

  • Attend with an open mind and heart, ready to meet new people and create new memories.

I wanted to do this exercise with you all, so this week I checked in with two friends I hadn’t spoke to in a few months and I signed up for a pottery class!

Reflection Time

After participating in these activities, take some time to reflect on how they made you feel.

  • How did contacting your old friend change your outlook or emotions?

  • What new perspectives or experiences did you gain from the community event or class?

  • Did you feel a shift in your mood or sense of belonging?

  • How might you continue to nurture these renewed or new connections?

Strengthening our social ties isn't a one-time effort—it's an ongoing journey that evolves over time. We often assume it should be easy, but as we've all come to realize in adulthood, that's not always the case. As you reflect on this connection activity, consider setting a goal to nurture and expand these relationships beyond just this month.

  • How about planning a regular meet-up with an old friend?

  • Or perhaps signing up for a community event that piques your interest?

By setting these intentions, we can create lasting bonds and boost our health!
